When should I change my wipers?

It's recommended that wiper blades are replaced annually - or more often for high mileage drivers. Worn or damaged wiper blades can leave dangerously obscured windscreens, create irritating noise and fail when you need them most.

If your windshield wiper blades leave streaks and smears, or if they scrape and hop across the screen, even when there is plenty of moisture on the glass, then you may need new wiper blades. If you pull a wiper arm away from the windshield, you might find tears or cracks in the wiper blade - other signs they need replacement. Wiper blades should be able to easily clear water, snow and slush.

It is important to use the heater or air conditioning vents properly in your car, as this may help the performance of the wipers. This is especially true in the mornings when you get into your car and all the windows are fogged up, try to get some heat onto the windscreen before you proceed to drive.

Before you replace the wiper blades, though, try wiping them clean with a damp cloth and make sure the wiper arm isn't bent or broken and that the blade sits snugly on the glass. Sometimes just lifting the arm off the glass and letting it snap back into place will make the blades seat more snugly on the glass and work better.
